Outdoor Club Outreach

The Outdoor Club of Jersey Shore High School consists of students in grades 9 – 12 who all have a vested interest in the outdoors and the environment. These students are from all backgrounds and academic pursuits, but they have one thing in common…they love to be outdoors whether it be fishing, hunting, hiking or just being with friends outside. This club is advised by three individuals to seek to instill in these young men and women the values of preserving the environment and working to keep the resources available for all to enjoy.

Activities for the outdoor club include float trips on Pine Creek, trail work in conjunction with Forestry, spring clean-up at Little Pine and taking part in teaching fly tying to seventh graders on their environmental field trip each spring. This group has won awards for their activities from DCNR in Harrisburg.

On May 4, the Outdoor Club was scheduled to help Little Pine State Park maintenance clean the trails, pick litter and, in general, ready the park for the summer season. The PA Fish and Boat Commission was also stocking trout in Little Pine Creek the same day. Part of the group walked and picked litter across the dam and up the trail on the far side of the lake and others went with the Fish Commission to stock trout. Prior to this trip (and knowing that they would be helping to stock trout), members of the club constructed “floats for trout” to disperse the trout into the stream.

The group reassembled at 1 pm for lunch at the pavilion near the beach.  PCPA members provided and hosted the Jersey Shore Outdoor Club for a picnic lunch at Little Pine State Park.  PCPA provided hot dogs with the fixins’, clementine oranges and apples, cookies and other treats baked by PCPA members, bottled water and Gatorade for drinks.  It was great for members to meet these young environmentalists and to express our gratitude for their efforts.  Students and advisors were grateful for the luncheon and expressed a desire to continue to work together for the benefit of the Pine Creek Valley and community

Individuals who are Life Members have their names entered onto a plaque.  Also, a special Memorial plaque is dedicated for individuals who hold the Pine Creek Valley in a special place in their lives.

For the past few years, these plaques were housed in a closet at the DCNR building where they could be seen by few individuals.

Our plaques have found a new home in the Cammal Library in Cammal, PA.  If you are in the Cammal area, stop into the library off Rte 44 to see them.
